Calloway schools plan on computer upgrades
Special to the Ledger
Although Calloway County was not in a pilot program that provided January funding from the Kentucky Department of Education for upgrading desktop, laptop and tablet computers, the district is expected to get started this month with their part of the upgrade program, according to David Dowdy, public relations coordinator for the Calloway County Schools.
The statewide project will eventually involve all 175 districts, according to Lisa Gross of the Kentucky Department of Education.
The Instructional Device Upgrade (IDU) Project was funded through the 2006 General Assembly and provides $50 million in bond funding to the state's public school districts to replace and purchase computers for use by students and teachers. Public school students, staff and faculty and Kentucky Department of Education employees also are eligible to purchase computer hardware for personal use through the project, she reported.
The Calloway County School District is expecting its share of state funding for technology to be just under $240,000. The money will be allotted toward purchase of new computer workstations for the local schools, Dowdy added. Exact numbers and configurations of the machines are currently being decided. State funding is expected to be available for the purchase of new equipment sometime in the near future, Dowdy noted.
