Inauguration for MSU's Dr. Dunn is Friday
MSU News Bureau
Dr. Randy J. Dunn will be inaugurated as the 11th president of Murray State University at 2 p.m. Friday, in the university's historic Lovett Auditorium. Delegates from education institutions from around the commonwealth of Kentucky will be on hand at the investiture of Dunn as president. MSU students, faculty and staff, and community members from around the region and state are invited to attend.
Inauguration ceremonies for universities and colleges date back to the University of Bologna in Italy, when scholars assembled and marched in academic dress on the occasion of the installation of the rector. The tradition has retained its distinction as the formal observance of the installation of the president of the institution. An inauguration directs attention to the mission of the university and its importance to society while affording the president the opportunity to present a personal vision for the institution.
The ceremony will begin with the academic procession. A mace bearer will lead in delegates from colleges and universities, university faculty and the presidential party. The MSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dennis L. Johnson, director of bands at Murray State, will perform the processional, recessional and special music for the occasion.
Collegiate representatives, their respective institutions and positions, and the year of founding include Wally O. Montgomery, University of Louisville, alumnus, 1798; Mary Evans Sias, Kentucky State University, president, 1886; Dayna Seelig, Morehead State University, special assistant to the president, 1887; and Rodney B. Piercey, Eastern Kentucky University, provost and vice president for academic affairs, 1906.
Also representing education institutions are Gary A. Ransdell, Western Kentucky University, president, 1906; Robert J. Imhoff, Mid-Continent University, president, 1949; James E. Selbe, Hopkinsville Community College, president, 1965; Judith Lewis Rhoads, Madisonville Community College, president, 1968; Michael B. McCall, Kentucky Community and Technical College System, president, 1997; and Barbara Veazey, West Kentucky Community and Technical College, president, 2003.
Several members of the Murray State University board of regents will offer remarks during the ceremony. Olivia Burr, BOR member, will give the invocation, after which Marilyn Buchanon, board chair, will give a welcome. Salutations will be delivered on behalf of the university community by board members Scott Ellison, student regent; Gina Winchester, staff regent; and Dr. Jay Morgan, faculty regent.
