Pre-trial conference for teacher canceled
By KRISTIN TAYLOR Staff Writer
The Murray Middle School teacher facing misdemeanor drug charges is scheduled for hearings in court and in front of educators next month.
Ann Greenfield, 34, a MMS physical education teacher, is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She originally also was charged with conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance with 1,000 yards of a school, but a Calloway County grand jury didn't indict her on that felony charge when it considered her case last month.
A suppression hearing dealing with evidence in this case is scheduled for May 17 in Calloway District Court. A pre-trial conference scheduled today was canceled after the hearing was requested, according to a district court spokeswoman.
Attorney Mark Blankenship represents Greenfield.
Greenfield was arrested after exchanging text messages with someone she didn't know was a Kentucky State Police trooper to allegedly purchase marijuana. KSP Trooper Trevor Pervine arranged a meeting with Greenfield and then other officers arrested her after she talked with Pervine, according to police reports.
Although she met Pervine, she didn't buy marijuana, according to court testimony.
A day after Greenfield's Feb. 22 arrest, Murray Independent Schools Superintendent Bob Rogers began termination proceedings.
Greenfield is protesting the termination through a tribunal-type hearing that is scheduled for May 21-23.
The hearing will be held in closed session, but the final report will be an open record, according to Kentucky Department of Education spokeswoman Lisa Gross.
The state education commissioner will appoint a three-member tribunal to include one teacher, one administrator and one lay person - all of whom live outside the district - to conduct the administrative hearing, according to KRS 161.790.
