Folks gather, ask ‘What's It Worth?'

Hoping to find out the value of baseball cards collected by a deceased spouse or an old book picked up at an auction, plus numerous other attic treasures, brought more than 100 Calloway County treasure hunters to the filming of the “What's It Worth” television program in downtown Murray.
“What's It Worth” host Mike Mallory, along with antiques appraisers Richard Berry and Jerry Snook, canvassed hundreds of items submitted for expert examination during the filming at the Miller Courthouse Annex Thursday morning.
Berry and Snook gave their assessment of the value of all the items, but focused on several significant pieces that were featured including a collection of baseball cards and autographed photos of players from the 1940s and 1950s worth thousands of dollars.
The items once belonged to the late Edgar Childress and submitted by his wife.
“He was about 11 years old when he started collecting,” Faye Parrish said. “Some of the photos he had sent in to get their autographs and they came back to him signed.”
Another woman was surprised to find out that an antique doll she submitted for appraisal was actually worth less than the box it was in. Berry valued the box at about $75 and the doll, along with the box at $125.
However value can be more than just monetary. Sometimes there is historic value which can be more important than what's used to stuff a wallet.
Berry, Snook and Mallory were impressed with the 1862 diary of Anna P. Dilly, possibly the wife of a Civil War soldier, describing a battle in or near Augusta, Ky. The diary was appraised at $2,000.
