MSU releases budget cuts
By HOLLY WISE Staff Writer
Murray State University administration released a proposed list of budget cuts today that equals $2.2 million to bring the university out of a six percent deficit created by the cut of state appropriations.
“This is a very challenging time as we work to keep MSU moving forward to bring excellence in teaching, learning and service,” said MSU President Dr. Randy Dunn in a released statement.
When the Board of Regents approved a six percent tuition increase during a special-called meeting April 11, it left the university with a $1.2 million deficit. The $2.2 million in cuts will fill that deficiency and give the board flexibility for staff raises and other institutional priorities, said Becky Watts, deputy to the president.
The bulk of the cuts - $598,568 - was found in academic affairs by various means including not filling vacant positions, eliminating temporary positions in farm management, cutting funding for the Commonwealth Honors Academy and eliminating funding for The Shield yearbook.
