Clearing work underway at industrial park site

Development of Murray-West Industrial Park continued to move forward this week as bulldozers began clearing acres of land at the site off U.S. 641 North.

Mark Manning, president of the Murray-Calloway County Economic Development Corp., said Thursday that EDC officials hope to get as much work done as possible before winter.

“We've started clearing the site. We've got stumps coming up and trees bulldozed and getting ready for the site to be graded and leveled,” Manning said. “It depends on how quickly we get it done, but if we're lucky we'll get the access road done before winter.

“We could have everything done by winter except for the water and sewer.”

If weather is adverse, construction of the access road will begin in early spring.

Manning said the EDC is already advertising for industrial prospects to locate on the site but want to move as quickly as possible to get infrastructure ready to serve.

“We're not waiting because if anybody did come along and they wanted to be in there we'd have the park ready before they even got their building ready, I guarantee you,” he said.

Other projects, such as water and sewer line installation to lots on-site, have to be coordinated with the City of Murray due to different funding sources.

EDC Chairman Ronnie Gibson said the board of directors want to do everything they can to move the project forward and bring more good jobs to Murray-Calloway County. Obtaining the land for the new park was a giant leap forward.

“When we looked at buying it and developing a park it was out of necessity. We had a need for additional land so we could recruit. We're actually trying to look to the next generation to provide a nice industrial park to recruit industry,” Gibson said. “We're going to be able to do that with valuable support from Sen. (Mitch) McConnell's office and willing sellers.

“We're appreciative of the Young family and the Gantt family for agreeing to sell the property.”
