Gov. to appoint replacement for Mike Ward

MAYFIELD, Ky. - Commonwealth Attorney Mike Ward resigned yesterday as part of a plea agreement during his arraignment in Graves County District Court.

The plea agreement stemmed from his second DU offense on July 11.

Ward was stoic in court when he pled guilty and his sentencing was read aloud.

Ward was sentenced to six months in jail of which he'll serve seven consecutive days in October in the Marshall County Jail. The other 173 days were probated on the conditions that Ward resign immediately from his duties as commonwealth attorney for the 42nd Judicial District, which includes Calloway and Marshall counties.

The conditions also include that he enroll in a one-year treatment program, spend 30 days in in-house treatment and that he commit no other criminal offenses.

“Mike felt it was in the interest of the people he serves and in the best interest of his family and in his own best interest that he step down,” his attorney, Will Kautz, told reporters outside the courtroom.

In addition to his jail sentence, Ward was also given a $500 fine, 12-month suspension of his driver's license and required to complete an alcohol treatment program.

Ward was not available for comment following the court session.
