Construction of turning lanes at the intersection of North 16th Street and Ky. 121 North is just one of several objectives the City of Murray is working on under a current and future comprehensive planning document. Easements and rights-of-way have already been secured on the project and reengineering of the intersection is in state Department of Highway plans. Several motorists were observed running the red light, cutting off other motorists and driving off the roadway on the right shoulder to avoid the light this morning.

Plan forming to guide city to 2014

What must be done to guide continued residential, transportation, government, business and industrial growth in Murray during the next five years?

That question was the focus of a meeting Tuesday night as members of the Murray Citizens Advisory Committee met with a Paducah-based engineering firm at Murray City Hall to begin work on the city's 2009-2014 comprehensive plan.

City Planner Candace Dowdy, a member of the committee representing Murray municipal government, said the effort involves updating the existing 2003-08 plan as required by state statute. The document, if approved by the Murray City Council next year, will serve as a blueprint for development planning through 2014 and beyond.

Dowdy said this week's gathering of committee members with Florence & Hutcheson Engineering Inc. of Paducah was the first step in an eight-month process.

“We went over our work tasks and our time schedule,” she said. “We hope to have our land use, transportation and community facilities elements completed by April 2009. At least that's our target date.”

Dowdy said the committee doesn't yet have detailed information concerning all planned changes in the document, but an initial effort to update land use objectives will be tackled first.

“Right now, we are just in the process of providing current information to them like our master plan for utilities, information regarding building permits and any other information that we might have on hand like our master plan for our parks system or Murray State or (Murray-Calloway County Hospital),” she said. “All of those things that are beneficial in putting all our land-use information together.”
