The Calloway County High School marching band is this year's grand champions of Murray State University's Festival of Champions.
CCHS finished first in its AAAA class Saturday and placed first overall with a total score of 77.6. Murray High School also did well and was the only band in class A to make it to finals. They finished with a total score of 67.2 and finished sixth overall competing against the larger bands.
Components of the competition included music performance, visual performance, general music effect and general visual effect. MSU Assistant Band Director John Fannin said there were 12 bands in finals and 19 in bands in prelims.
Getting a high school band to be good enough to reach the final four competition at the state finals near the end of October is not an easy feat. At last year's Kentucky Music Educators Association championships at the University of Louisville, CCHS and MHS both finished second in their classes. CCHS has its sights set on Madisonville North Hopkins High School's “Marching Maroons,” who have been state champions in class AAAA for three years in a row. Jacob Vaughan, one of CCHS's two drum majors, said he thought they stood a good chance at besting them for first.
Overall, the final rankings were: 1. CCHS - 77.6; 2. Madisonville North Hopkins - 77.0; 3. Marshall County - 73.7; 4. Daviess County - 72.5; 5. O' Fallon Township - 72.3; 6. Murray - 67.2; 7. Henderson County - 65.2; 8. Muhlenberg South - 64.5; 9. Caldwell County - 61.9; 10. Central Hardin - 60.3; 11. Francis Howell - 59.7; 12. Trigg County - 58.4
