Calloway OKs 2008-09 taxes
By HAWKINS TEAGUE Staff Writer
The Calloway County Board of Education approved the tax levies for the 2008-09 school year last night in a special session.
Superintendent Steve Hoskins said that the special meeting had to be called because Kentucky statute requires that school boards advertise the public hearing for tax rates for two consecutive weeks in the local newspaper, which had not been done by the time of their regular meeting two weeks ago.
The personal property tax will be 39.9 cents per $100 of assessed value, which is the same as last year. The real property tax will go down to 37.6 cents from last year's rate of 37.8 cents.
Hoskins said this was the second year the rates would be reduced because real estate values had gone up. He said it had stayed the same the year before that and that the utility tax of three percent had remained the same for several years.
The motor vehicle tax is 52.1 percent, which has also been the same for years, said Jan Pigg, the district's finance officer.
“It's a good time for people to get some relief for a change,” Chairman Jeff Gordon said.
