Survey information may help retail recruitment
By HAWKINS TEAGUE Staff Writer
A recent study of Murray's population might serve as an important tool for recruiting businesses.
Chamber of Commerce Director Lance Allison told Chamber members at Tuesday's Business@Breakfast about the Buxton Retail Market Survey, conducted by Buxton, which does extensive research on customer demographics so retailers and marketers can target specific types of people based on their lifestyles.
The company collaborated with the Chamber, the university and the city to collect the data and compile its conclusions, he said.
Allison said to draw new businesses the first step is to define the “trade area.” Murray's primary trade area is everything within a 13-minute drive while the secondary area includes places like the lakes, Benton and Mayfield.
The second step is to define the types of people businesses would be targeting in those areas. Using lifestyles and attitudes of people living in and around Murray, the Buxton survey put together a list of potential revenues for certain types of businesses.
