Cold blast tonight could end Ky. growing season

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Frigid air is moving into Kentucky and forecasters say it could end the growing season in much of the state.

A freeze watch was posted Monday for all of western and central Kentucky to east of Lexington.

The National Weather Service said a building high pressure area in Canada is sending cold air southward.

Temperatures at or below 32 degrees are forecast for early Tuesday and early Wednesday for a few hours both days.

By Wednesday afternoon, more southerly winds should bring warmer air into the state.

The cold weather is also prompting road crews to treat bridges.

Due to the freeze watch that has been issued for tonight through Wednesday morning, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to treat some area bridges with salt brine to help prevent ice from forming on the bridge decks.  Brine will be applied primarily to bridges that cross larger bodies of water where there is a potential for moisture to freeze on the deck driving surface.

Through the day today highway crews will apply salt brine to the US 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland, the US 60 Tennessee River Bridge at Ledbetter, and the I-24 bridges over the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers.

Motorists should use appropriate caution if they encounter highway crews apply brine to these river crossings.
