Bridge discussion deals with cost, aesthetics

CADIZ, Ky. - “We are going to build these bridges.”

Those were the first words spoken by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Tim Choate to a gathering of about 250 lake area residents gathered at Lake Barkley State Park Thursday night interested in construction of two new bridges at Land Between the Lakes.

While recapping progress made during the previous year, Choate, who also serves as project manager, said the meeting was part of the third and final series of public meetings concerning bridge design which will also focus on finding ways to build a bridge western Kentucky could be proud of while also keeping costs within reason.

Pointing to photo examples of the four designs now under consideration, Choate said transportation officials want to build a bridge that will last for 100 years that is both aesthetically pleasing, functional and safe as state and federal dollars will allow.

Choate then turned the microphone over to Michael Hancock, a cabinet highway construction engineer, who pointed out the economic difficulties the project will face before the first steel beam is put in place. To make the best use of limited funding, Hancock said officials are reviewing all state construction projects for practical solutions that will save taxpayer money without compromising safety.
