Firemen battle cold at Wednesday fires
By GREG TRAVIS and TOM BERRY Ledger & Times
The Murray Fire Department responded to two fires Wednesday as temperatures hovered below the freezing mark. At 11:51 a.m., firefighters extinguished a house fire at 216 N. 13th St. (pictured above and at right). The house was owned by John McCarty. Murray Fire Marshal Dickie Walls said the fire was caused by an overloaded electrical circuit and originated in the bedroom. At 3:36 p.m., the department was called to the scene of a vehicle fire on the campus of Murray State University. Firefighters extinguished the Murray High School Tiger Band transport vehicle, which had become engulfed in flames between Lovett Auditorium and Faculty Hall. Fire Chief Michael Skinner said the fire was caused by the battery in a golf cart in the back of the vehicle that shorted out immediately after the driver had parked and stepped out. No equipment was inside and the only other thing in the back was a generator, he reported Thursday morning.
