MURRAY – The Murray Independent School District’s chess team competed in the Quad A Regional Championship tournament at Paducah Tilghman High School on Feb. 23 and received top recognitions.
The Murray Elementary K-3 team continued their first-place trend for an undefeated season as they took home the first place trophy for regionals. Individually, Cabot French took ninth-place, David Schwenck was sixth-place and Liam Ryan took home first place.
The Murray High School K-12 team won sixth place at regionals. Connor Blalock took him an award for being the top player for all players under a 1000 rating. They also had a successful season with being the first place team at the Graves County Scholastic on Feb. 2.
The K-3, K-5 and K-8 teams will be advancing to the state championship tournament in Louisville on March 23.
Previously pictured on the education page of the Ledger & Times were the Murray Middle K-5 team who continued their first-place trend for an undefeated season when they took home the first-place trophy for regionals. Thomas Bucy won an award for being the top player for all players under a 600 rating. Individually, out of 33 K-5 players in the region, Boran Song placed ninth, Kenzie Myers placed eighth, Thomas Renick placed seventh, Ethan Peng placed sixth, Ali Yarali placed fifth, Aidan Lovett placed second and Myles Barnett took him first-place.
The Murray Middle K-8 team came in third at the competition. Individually, Preston Key placed 10th, Jackson Kimbro was eighth and Landon UIrich was seventh.
