MURRAY – National School Counseling Week was celebrated Feb. 4-8. According to the American School Counselor Association (ACSA), this special week is not meant as a time of appreciation or gift-giving, but instead seeks to provide awareness of school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a virtual part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Murray Independent School District employs four school counselors to assist the 1,730 students at Murray Elementary, Murray Middle and Murray High School.
Kentucky currently has more than 300 schools without a certified school counselor. Similarly, schools with a counselor often have numbers far beyond the ASCA recommended ratio of one counselor for every 250 students.
