Temple Hill Lodge meets Tuesday
Temple Hill 276 Masonic Lodge will hold its regular meeting Tuesday, July 2. A meal will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. Master Jeff Kirks urges all master masons to attend.
CCPL to close for holiday
The Calloway County Public Library will be closed Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day.
Family Night in the Park planned
The Murray Bank’s Family Night in the Park will be from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, July 4, at the Murray-Calloway County Chestnut Park. (Note change in location) This family-friendly event will consist of many activities including free use of the pool and the Spray Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free inflatables and hot air balloon rides. There will be food and craft vendors also present. The Fireworks Extravaganza begins at 9:30 p.m.
Boy Scouts to host annual breakfast
Boy Scout Troop 45 will host its annual Gary Taylor Memorial Breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, at Murray First United Methodist Church. The menu will include country and city ham, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, grits and assorted beverages. Tickets are available at the door for $10 for adults, $5 for children and first responders in uniform will eat free. Proceeds will benefit Troop 45 to help with the cost of transportation, equipment and camping adventures.
Declaration of Independence to be read
The Capt. Wendell Oury Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution will host a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, on the downtown courthouse lawn following the parade. All visitors are encouraged to join to hear a section of this historic document.
Main Street Mile accepting registration
The Main Street Mile, sponsored by Briggs & Stratton, will be at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 4. Registration is from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Sparks Hall. MMS Band to hold used book sale
The Murray Middle School’s 12th annual Used Book Sale will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 4, on the front lawn of the school. In case of rain, the sale will be in the school cafeteria. Gently used books, games, puzzles, toys and other items have been donated by the community and will be sold to help with expenses of the band’s transportation and special instruction for the upcoming school year.
Streets closed for 4th of July Parade
Streets closed from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, for the Freedom Fest Parade will be Main Street between 10th and Industrial streets; North 10th St. from Chestnut to Main St. (for parade lineup); Olive Boulevard from North 12th to 8th streets (for parade lineup); Sharpe Street from North 12th to 8th streets (for parade lineup); Payne Street from 12th to 8th streets (for parade lineup); and Walnut Street at 10th Street (for parade lineup). The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at 10th and Main streets and will continue on Main Street.
Legion offers help to veterans
Service officers Mark Kennedy, Bill Cowan and Ray Campbell of American Legion Post 73 will be available from 1-4 p.m. each Wednesday at 310 Bee Creek Drive to assist veterans and their families who need to file VA claim. Need Line updates items needed
Need Line has issued an updated request for items needed. They include mustard, potatoes, tea bags, bread, saltine crackers, pancake mix, pancake syrup, catsup, onions, Kool Aid, buns, peanut butter, pickle relish, pork and beans, sugar, Jiffy Mix, eggs, margarine, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, ground beef, hot dogs and chicken. Personal hygiene items are extremely low and needed are toilet paper, dish liquid, laundry detergent, soap, plastic storage bags (1- and 2-gallon sizes), and hotel or travel-size shampoo, lotions and soap. Large brown bags are also requested. Need Line is at 509 N. Eighth St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Need Line is a United Way agency.
