MARSHALL COUNTY — The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said a wreck involving a semi truck and a pickup truck Monday morning near the Marshall/Graves county line resulted in one death.
In a news release, the sheriff’s office said that the wreck was reported at about 4:45 a.m. Monday on Interstate 69 (Julian Carroll Purchase Parkway) in Marshall County, just before the Graves County line.
The sheriff’s office that a preliminary report indicates that Brian K. Chappell of Livermore was driving a semi loaded with crushed cars south on I-69 when it entered the median and moved back onto the highway where it overturned. This blocked both southbound lanes of the interstate.
Shortly thereafter, the sheriff’s office said Philip Givans of Gilbertsville was southbound in a pickup truck and crashed into the overturned semi rig after apparently not noticing the scene in front of him in time.
Chappell was pronounced dead at the scene. Givans was taken to a local hospital with what were described as serious injuries. The highway was closed to much of Monday as cleanup crews worked to reopen the road.
