End of tobacco curing season

As September winds to a close in the next couple of weeks, sights like this will become fewer in Calloway County. Smoke is seen rising out of two of the barns owned by Terry and Mary Ann Orr a few miles south of Murray as the dark-fired tobacco crop hanging inside is cured. Terry said it is common for passersby who aren’t familiar with the process of curing dark-fired tobacco – which is commonly used for chewing tobacco and pipe tobacco – to call 911 to report a fire, so the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office knows they can always call him to make sure everything is fine.
