Bob Rogers is a few days away from watching the official opening of a building named after him.
That building — the Bob Rogers Murray High School Multipurpose Gymnasium — will be the center point of a community open house set for 6 p.m. Thursday, prior to the monthly meeting of the Murray Independent School District Board of Education. The new facility, which will provide a practice area for numerous MHS athletic teams, is located between the main campus and the Lady Tiger softball outfield fence.
“We’re looking real forward to this and are thrilled for our students,” said Rogers, who was notified that the building was being named for him during the February board meeting.
Since that moment, when the board members unanimously approved the idea, Rogers has deflected attention from himself.
“I guess, if you had to say it, that part of my dream for this district was to see this get done,” he said, going back several years to when he realized an auxiliary facility was necessary. “I saw how crowded it was at the high school, and how you had kids having to practice in the hallways, even the lunch area, because the main gym was being used. You had kids staying there until 9 o’clock at night.
“I know the kids are really excited about this and the biggest thing to me is that I want them to be proud of it and I definitely think that’s the case.”
Rogers said he and other officials – including the project’s main contractor, Max Cleaver of Murray-based Cleaver Construction, and Craig Thomas, architect for the RBS Design Group of Owensboro – will have a walk-through tour of the facility prior to the open house, which is open to the community.
“We had over 100 people that made donations of one kind or another to this project so this was a big, big effort from a lot of people,” Rogers said, adding that the gym floor was placed several days ago and striping was performed this past week. “All of the workers on this have just done a great job. We really appreciate their efforts on this.”
Thursday’s event will mark the first official function for the facility. The first MHS-affiliated event scheduled to happen is the junior-senior prom on April 25.
