Joanna Sykes Wilder, 82, of Murray, Kentucky, died Tuesday,  July 2, 2019, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray.

She was born April 5, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Wendell Allbritten and Sadie Wilson Allbritten, while they were there for work during the depression. They soon moved back to Calloway County where she graduated from New Concord High School and Murray State University. 

Joanna was a teacher and school librarian for over 40 years, 27 with the Calloway County School System and 14 with the Buncombe County School System as a media specialist in North Carolina. She loved her students and always enjoyed seeing them and having them speak to her, even after she could no longer remember their name. 

She was an active member of Glendale Road Church of Christ and assisted with the benevolent program, the church library and the caring and sharing program. She was a charter member of the Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and enjoyed being a volunteer at Angel’s Attic. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Max M. "Buddy" Sykes, who died in 1980.

Joanna is survived by her husband, James Wilder of Murray; her son, Shea Sykes and wife Brenda of Murray; two grandchildren, Josh Sykes and wife Abby of Murray and Kelsey Sykes of Jeffersonton, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Nola Sykes and Nash Sykes, both of Murray; one stepson, Bart Wilder of Birmingham, Alabama; two stepgrandchildren, Drew Wilder and Micah Wilder, both of Birmingham; two brothers, Hal Allbritten and wife Patricia and Ike Allbritten and wife Pat, all of Murray; and several nieces and nephews. 

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2019, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with John Dale and Steven Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in  Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019, at the funeral home.

Iva Dell Carson, 88, of Kirksey, Kentucky, died Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. 

She was born Feb. 6, 1931, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Leonard Ellis Davis and Elizabeth Norphlett Davis.

She was a hairdresser and a member of Kirksey Baptist Church. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fray Carson, and one brother, Ellis Davis. 

Mrs. Carson is survived by one son, Gary N. Carson and wife Kay of Paducah; sisters, Joann Rodgers and husband Billy Gerald of Farmington, Carol Craig of Hazel and Sally Curry and husband Mike of Mayfield; one brother, Ronald Newsom and wife Peggy of Golo; two grandchildren, Donna Owen and husband Jason and Patty Fischer and husband Mike, all of Paducah; four great-grandchildren, Kody Owen, Kristen Owen, Sean Monroe and Jacob Fischer; and three great-great-grandchildren, Gabriella Owen, Jayden Owen and Mackenzie Byrum. 

The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Charles Palmer and Van Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019, at the funeral home.

Shelia Olive, 56, of Henderson, Nevada, formerly of Murray, Kentucky, died Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena Campus in Henderson. 

Shelia was a loving and devoted grandmother and friend. Her personality always made others feel at home around her. 

She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Olive, and a sister, Tammie Olive. 

Shelia is survived by her daughter, Kayla McIntosh  and husband Franklin and their daughter Kaylynn, all of Henderson; her father, RC Olive of Murray; a sister, Diane Olive Perry and husband Donald of Almo; brothers, Glendale Olive of Mayfield and Ronnie Olive of Murray; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. 

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2019, at the Church of the Living God, 719 Gwen St . in Paris, Tennessee.

Patty Maness Mitchuson, 78, of Dexter, Kentucky, died Thursday, June 27, 2019, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray, Kentucky.

She was a homemaker and of Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Maness and Bertha Thorne Maness, and five brothers, Ed Maness, Jim Maness, Butch Maness, Jerry Maness and Johnny Maness.

Mrs. Mitchuson is survived by her husband of 56 years, Obie Mitchuson; one daughter, Lisa Mitchuson Hutson; one son, Kevin Mitchuson; and three grandchildren, Danny Hutson, Donnie Hutson and Samuel Imes.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Garvie Josephine Robinson, 96, of Murray, Kentucky, died Friday, June 28, 2019, at Spring Creek Health Care in Murray.

She was born Dec. 29, 1922, in Murray, to Will and Nellis Theobold Williams.  She was an avid quilter, as well as a great cook. She worked for many years at Sammons Bakery in Murray and was a member of Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Robinson; three brothers, Fred Williams, Bill Williams and Buddy Williams; a sister, June Hopkins; and one grandson, Michael Wayne Swift.

Mrs. Robinson is survived by a son, Jimmy Dan Robinson and wife Carol of Sedalia; three daughters, Marilyn Swift and husband Harold of Murray, Reta Hancock and husband Fred of Union City, Tennessee, and Cindy Garrett and husband David of Benton; seven grandchildren, Trina Swift Lasater and husband Dayton, Donna Swift Ashworth and husband Steve, Christa Hancock Inmon and husband Ty, Heather Hancock, Lorie Robinson Fulton and husband Jay, Miranda Jo Robertson and husband Paul and Mandi Robinson Sanderson and husband Keith; 13 great-grandchildren, Amy Ross Pervine and husband Trevor, Emily Lasater Ashton and husband Michael, Josh Lasater and wife Mandy; Austin Ashworth and wife Kristin, Brandon Ashworth, William Tyler Inmon, Audrey Marie Inmon, Aspen May, Hamilton May, Vivian May, Noah Fulton, Lila Fulton, Ryder Hyde; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was born Sept. 1, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Rose Louise Steimel and Robert Charles Kelley Sr.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Keith Allen Murphy, and a brother, Robert Charles Kelley Jr.

Ms. Alford is survived by her two daughters, Laurie Ann Murphy of Murray and Tina Louise Kendall and husband Mark of New Concord; one daughter/granddaughter, Shantel Murphy-Scott (Ron Reed) of Hazel; three sons, Kevin Lee Murphy and Allen Thomas Murphy and wife Janice, all of St. Louis, Missouri, and Brian Gerard Scott and wife Chasity of Valles Mines, Missouri; one sister, Ruth Isabel Chunn of Doniphan, Missouri; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
