On a blustery cold day the Murray High Tigers swept the Lakers winning the girls matchup at Calloway and the boys matchup at Murray High.
The girls finished up first securing their win 9-0 and only losing one set on the entire day. After the doubles rounds, the Tigers made short work of the Lakers winning each singles match 8-0.
“We played well especially in the conditions we were in,” Murray High head coach Chris Allen said. “We’ve been practicing really hard, so I’m just proud of their effort and execution.”
Over on the Mel Purcell tennis courts at Murray High the boys carried on the winning defeating the Lakers boys team 8-1. The Tigers swept the doubles points and the lone blemish on the day for the team was a loss by number one Carter Allen to the Lakers number one Carlos Aguilar.
Aguilar is one of two transfer students on the roster for head coach Josh Price.
“They’re athletic and they seem to pick it up pretty easily, so it helps out,” Price said.
This Lakers team is inexperienced and still has a lot to learn.
“Our whole team, boys and girls, we’re just so young,” Price said. “Brand new players coming out so it’s hard to compete when you’re still learning the basics.”
The Tigers are now 2-0 on the season and Chris Allen has his team focused on playing for one another. “Every win counts (in a match),” Allen said. “Number six is as important as number one.”
The Tigers will look to stay undefeated against Graves County on Monday, while the Lakers will be in action against Marshall County.
